Cradling California’s most famous wine country, these two world-famous wine regions, both about an hour’s drive north of San Francisco, boast... The homeowner, Jonathan Yantis, bought the home above the cliffs for $24 million in December 2020. I'm Justin Taylor, your go-to guide at "Go Hawaii US." I've been soaking in the colors and stories of Hawaii for a while now, and I want you to join me on this fantastic journey.

It starts at the small parking lot on Lower Honoapi’ilani Road and leads you out to Makaluapuna Point. If you reach the Ritz-Carlton before the parking lot, you’ve gone too far. If you are a first-time visitor to Maui, start by reading our article on the best things to do in Maui.

Namalu Bay and the Kapalua Cliff House

The Kapalua Coastal Trail turns into a packed mud trail that takes you past an area protected for nesting seabirds. Renovated and operated by the Montage Hotel, the Cliff House is now available for private events. The Montage Hotel, an upscale ritzy resort-like hotel, sprawls on the other side of the trail. Most of the trail is open with no shade, so the middle of the day can get hot. I personally prefer to jog this trail early morning or late evening.

And west, it’s nothing but water—a vantage point so “out there” that you can actually whale watch while you dine. It’s no wonder this place has drawn locals and visitors for more than 150 years. This breathtaking location offers panoramic views of the Pacific Ocean, Molokai, and Lana’i and is separated a short walk from the resort offering complete privacy. The Cliff House accommodates events from 40 guests for a cocktail reception or up to 28 guests for sit down dinner. This premier venue offers floor-ceiling windows that frame the spectacular ocean views. You can also park at The Ironwoods in the middle which is less likely to be busy.

We took closer to two hours, we wanted to explore the tide pools and the dragon’s teeth area. If you take some of the side trails to the Dragon’s Teeth (Makaluapuna Point) or to the cliff house or Hawea Point, you will add a mile or two. There is public parking at Oneloa Beach, at the start of the Dragon’s Teeth Access Trail, and further public parking at D.T. This is located just to the south of Kapalua Bay Beach, just off Lower Honoapiilani Road.

Snorkeling and kayaking made a splash with guests before our sit-down feast that was served by tuxedo-clad waiters from the Kapalua Bay Hotel. Now the Montage Kapalua Bay resort that opened last year allows its guests and the public to rent the Cliff House for private parties catered by its chef. It’s the legendary Cliff House, which for more than 75 years, has served as a coveted retreat on an island already embraced as a paradise. A good rule is that if no one else is jumping, you should stay out. And even if people are jumping, check the water, and make your own decision. For many of us, the thought of jumping off a cliff into water is pretty terrifying.

As you wrap up your Kapalua Coastal Trail journey, you’ll be greeted by yet another pristine beach – D.T. This family-friendly oasis boasts grassy lawns and picnic areas, creating the perfect setting for a relaxed day out. As you continue along the Kapalua Coastal Trail, you’ll reach Namalu Bay, home to an iconic cliff house perched right on the edge of the cliffs. So, whether you’re an early bird, a sunset chaser, or a midday adventurer, time your Kapalua Coastal Trail journey to match your preferred temperature and enjoy the stunning scenery. So, if the first spot doesn’t pan out, don’t fret – Oneloa Beach is your next parking oasis.

Embark on a challenging 10-mile journey from near the end of the Kapalua Coastal Trail at D.T. This strenuous hike ascends a ridge, taking you 2,500 feet up to the Maunalei Arboretum. For couples seeking a touch of romance along the Kapalua Coastal Trail, indulge in the charm of beachfront restaurants that elevate your dining experience. So, lace up those hiking shoes and treat yourself to the beauty of Kapalua Bay as you begin your unforgettable journey on the Kapalua Coastal Trail. The Kapalua Coastal Trail is an out-and-back hike, and you’ve got options – start from either end at Kapalua Bay or D.T. Heck, you can even dive in from points in the middle, depending on where you parked.

Starting at $4.62/week.

Kapalua Bay Beach is a beautiful crescent-shaped beach with typically calm waters that makes it a great spot for families. It’s one of our favorite beaches to spend time at and it also offers some of the best snorkeling in West Maui. It’s a lot smaller than other resort beaches you can find in other parts of Maui but it still has plenty to do and see. The Kapalua Coastal Trail offers a lot of different sights to see including a variety of beaches, rock formations, and picturesque views of the ocean. You don’t have to hike the entire trail to take in some sights, however, I’d recommend doing the entire thing because as I’ve mentioned before, it’s worth it for the awe-inspiring views.

The last section of the Kapalua Coastal Trail hike is yet another beautiful beach, the D.T. Fleming Beach Park, with family-oriented grass lawns and picnic areas. I make it a point to get as close to Dragon’s Point, the tip of the arm jutting into the ocean. From here you get spectacular views of the ocean, and I’ve seen humpback whales with calves breaching nearby. You can see many of them jumping off the cliffs into the ocean, the more daring ones from higher cliffs!

Fleming Beach Park, or even from points in the middle, depending on where you parked. If you’re coming from the direction of Lahaina, this one is the closest (but also the most popular). The Kapalua Coastal Trail is one of the best family hikes on Maui, and is kid-friendly. This is a very popular running trail, and obviously will take a lot less if you are jogging. While trail is mostly well-marked, there are a few spots where you lose the trail a bit over rocky sections and may need to scramble over some of the rockier areas, but usually quite manageable. Sometimes, entertainment is provided au naturale by, say, a sea of colorful kiteboarders just off of the bay, or humpback whales swimming by.

Once you reach this part of the trail, you can either go left and venture out to Hawae Point or go right and continue on with the Kapalua Coastal Trail. My recommendation would be to spend some time exploring the point, take some pictures, and then circle back to where you can continue on with the trail. Just be sure to stay on the trails because as mentioned, this is a nesting ground for protected seabirds. Namalu Bay is located right next to Kapalua Bay Beach and is the next stop on this hike. It’s even smaller than Kapalua Bay and doesn’t have a beach but the view from the point between the two bays is incredible.

For most of the trail, you want to stand far back from the cliff edges, to keep away from any potentially tumbling rocks. But for those with an adventurous spirit, the Kapalua Coastal Trail hides a secret cliff jumping spot. Look to the south, and there are lines of waves rolling onto Ocean Beach, defining the western boundary of San Francisco. To the north, the vista takes in rugged headlands and the ruins of the historic Sutro Baths.
